Instagram's profile grid now shows posts as 3:4 tiles, so the sides of square and 4:5 posts are trimmed on your profile. Keep faces and text away from the left and right edges.
Print sizes at 300 DPI
300 DPI (dots per inch) is the usual standard for sharp prints. To print at a given size, your image needs at least this many pixels:
| Print size | Pixels |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 in (≈10 × 15 cm) | 1200 × 1800 |
| 5 × 7 in (≈13 × 18 cm) | 1500 × 2100 |
| 8 × 10 in (≈20 × 25 cm) | 2400 × 3000 |
| A4 (210 × 297 mm) | 2480 × 3508 |
| US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) | 2550 × 3300 |
Passport and ID photo sizes
| Country | Photo size | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm) | 600 × 600 |
| UK and most of Europe | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| India | 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 |
| Canada | 50 × 70 mm | 591 × 827 |
Size is only one of the rules. Passport photos also have requirements for head size, background colour, lighting and expression, and these change. Always check your government's official guidance before printing.
Crop or resize?
- Crop cuts away part of the photo to change its shape, for example from landscape to square.
- Resize changes the number of pixels but keeps the shape.
- To fit a platform, crop to the right ratio first, then resize to the exact pixel size.
- Avoid enlarging a small image, because it turns blurry. Start from the largest original you have.
