Convert HEIC to JPG, PNG and WebP
A free converter that runs in your browser is on the way. Until then, here's what you need to know about image formats.
Coming soon: convert many photos at once, compress them to a target size like 100 KB, and download them as a zip. Everything runs on your device, and nothing is uploaded.
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is a version of the HEIF format (High Efficiency Image File Format). iPhones have saved photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11 in 2017. A HEIC photo takes roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality, which is why Apple uses it.
The catch is compatibility. Many Windows PCs, websites, upload forms and older apps can't open HEIC files, so converting to JPG is the usual fix.
Why won't my HEIC photo open on Windows?
Windows needs extra image extensions from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC files, and they aren't always installed or free. Converting the photo to JPG avoids installing anything.
How to stop your iPhone saving HEIC
- Open Settings and tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Choose Most Compatible.
New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC. When you share or upload a photo straight from your iPhone, iOS often converts it to JPG for you; HEIC files mostly turn up when you copy photos to a computer.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs HEIC
| Format | Best for | Transparency | Opens everywhere |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, uploads, email | No | Yes |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos, text, cutouts | Yes | Yes |
| WebP | Images on websites; often 25–35% smaller than JPG | Yes | Modern browsers and most apps |
| HEIC | Storing photos on iPhone | Rarely used | No, mainly Apple devices |
Quick rule: photos go to JPG. Anything with text, sharp edges or a transparent background goes to PNG. Images for your own website go to WebP.
How to compress an image to a specific size
Job portals, government forms and exam sites often limit uploads to 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB. Two things make a file smaller:
- Lower the quality. For JPG and WebP, quality 70–85 usually looks the same as the original at a fraction of the size.
- Reduce the dimensions. A phone photo is often 4000 pixels wide. Most forms need 1200–1600 pixels at most.
Our converter will do this for you: pick a target such as “under 100 KB” and it finds the best quality that fits.
Is it safe to convert photos online?
Many online converters upload your photos to their servers to process them. PhotoEditWeb converts everything inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. That matters for ID scans, documents and personal photos.
